yum
A shout out to my friend John and my long-time love, the Sunlight Cafe, for inspiring tonight's dinner. Made lemon-tahini dressing over the weekend, and have been enjoying many tasty meals since. Garlicky, lemony goodness on veggies, brown rice and tofu. Can't beat it.

Spring Break Highlights, Day Four
Adelaide's teacher sent home a homework packet for the break which included some journal pages to fill out and return. Adelaide was excited to sit down and document her spring break as of today, the 4th day without school. Here are the highlights from her point of view:Grandma got top priority (first page). I couldn't agree more.
Dorothy, class hamster, who came home with us.
Birthday presents, also good but not as good as grandmas and pets.
Good Food! Yes! Adelaide made dinner for Paige and I the last night she was here. Pretty impressive given that she is only allowed a butter knife.
And to think, we have five more days to enjoy. Love vacation.

Think Positive
On Saturday, about a thousand people gathered 3 times in 3 different downtown Seattle spots to participate in a "flash mob." What is it, you say? Well, basically, a core group of dancers choreographed a short dance performance designed to grow into a large-scale amateur show. They held a couple of rehearsals and posted videos online if you couldn't make it, kept the exact time and location a secret until the end of the last rehearsal, then showed up and had fun! Imagine what the tourist and pedestrians who just happened to be in the area must have thought. I'm not sure why, but I think this is one of the most heart-warming things I've seen in a long time, and I can't wait for an opportunity to take part. Really, it's just a celebration of the positive, and we don't have enough of those. Enjoy!

Now We Are Six
Six years ago today it was about 40 degrees warmer outside than it is today, but the little creature who came to be born and named Adelaide was still not convinced it was a good idea to leave her cozy womb and face the bright lights, big city. But come she did, with the help of a surgeon and a giant team of wonderful people. And today, we enjoyed the fact that she has six years of loving life behind her and many more to come. This morning, after our 5 a.m. wake-up (of course) and an hour or so of negotiating, and a big cup of coffee, we started with presents. Why wait? We listened to her new music and did a little dancing, and then Adelaide tried out her new drawing books. She chose her new dress from Grandma and Grandpa to wear to school on her special day.
We went out for chocolate chip pancakes on the way to school, and after lunch at school Dad brought the birthday girl's requested treat of brownies and chocolate milk for the class. After school was our usual Friday plus some fun presents and cards that came in the mail today. Adelaide loved everything, and has already become very attached to her new doll from Uncle Dave and Aunt Annie. She has named her Francois and apparently she can only speak French.
More celebrations yet to come this weekend, but all in all, a very happy birthday was had by all.

Math for Aliens
This morning in the car, Adelaide's toy alien came along for the ride. He commented about the speed our spaceship could go, and asked if the "freeway" meant we were free to go as fast as we pleased. I informed him that we could drive 60 miles per hour, and then when he asked me what "60" meant, I told him he needed to talk directly to Adelaide (I was done having a conversation with an inanimate plastic object at that point.).
A: Okay, alien . . . listen. One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten. These are called numbers. Sixty is a number. You can only count to 6, because you have 3 fingers on each hand, but we count higher than that.
Alien: Silence. (perhaps counting to six in his head?)

Easter Eggs
Potato Patch, Round 2
The seed potatoes arrived yesterday, right on schedule, and are now laid out and ready to sprout. They need a week or two of warm, light, and air and they will be ready to plant. Adelaide and I will put the finishing touches on the garden and then during spring break, we can plant! This year we will most likely put the potatoes in the raised beds and east side yard, as the west side needs one more year off before we grow potatoes there again.

that place that shall remain nameless
Morning conversation:
A: Mom, can we go to that place that gives out the goodie bags?
C: (puzzled look)
A: They have a big yellow M for a sign*. That place?
C: Oh, no, we don't eat there. That place doesn't have food that we eat.
A: Is it meat?
C: Yes, but it's not good food, hon. It's just chemicals and not really food.
A: But they have those goodie bags, so I want to go there.
C: Yes, they try to lure you in with that, don't they.
* Note: As far as I can recall, the name of this establishment has never been uttered by me in earshot of A.
