Math for Aliens

This morning in the car, Adelaide's toy alien came along for the ride. He commented about the speed our spaceship could go, and asked if the "freeway" meant we were free to go as fast as we pleased. I informed him that we could drive 60 miles per hour, and then when he asked me what "60" meant, I told him he needed to talk directly to Adelaide (I was done having a conversation with an inanimate plastic object at that point.).

A: Okay, alien . . . listen. One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten. These are called numbers. Sixty is a number. You can only count to 6, because you have 3 fingers on each hand, but we count higher than that.

Alien: Silence. (perhaps counting to six in his head?)
